Ambulance Nigeria: World Blood Donor Day 2022

Ambulance Nigeria, headquartered in Lagos celebrates the World Blood Donor Day 2022.
Do you know ambulances are also used to move blood and it’s products during emergencies?
Did You Know?
- Over one hundred million units of blood are donated each year throughout the world.1
- An average of seven million Africans need safe blood transfusion across the 54-nation continent for survival. 4
- In Nigeria, 80-90 per cent of maternal mortality is because of bleeding complications that we are not able to manage due to shortage of blood.4
- With a roughly 200 million population, Nigeria needs an average of 1.8 million pints of blood annually to keep the health of her people safe and sound. 4
- Nigeria’s National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS) says it collects only 500,000 pints of blood every year, leaving a shortfall of about 73.3 per cent. 4
Conditions where people might need blood?
- Blood loss following an injury
- Sickle cell crisis with a low PCV
- Excessive bleeding during childbirth
- Patients preparing for surgery
- People suffering from blood diseases
- People suffering from cancer/chronic diseases
Ambulances help to move blood during emergencies.
Who can donate blood and who can’t?
- Age-You must be at least 17 years old. There is no upper age limit for blood donation if you are well with no restrictions or limitations to your activities. 5
- High Blood Pressure – Blood pressure below 180/100 at the time of donation. Medications for high blood pressure do not disqualify you from donating. 5
- Body piercing – You must not donate if you have had a tongue, nose, belly button or genital piercing in the past 12 months. Donors with pierced ears are eligible. 5
- Cold/Flu/Feeling Unwell – If you feel unwell, have a cold/flu or treating a respiratory infection, reschedule. 5
- Diabetes – Acceptable if it is well controlled, 5
- Weight – You must weigh at least 110 pounds. Blood volume is in proportion to body weight. Donors who weigh less than 110 pounds may not tolerate the removal of the required volume of blood. 5
